Located in the South Bay and against the Diablo Range foothills in Santa Clara County, Milpitas is part of Silicon Valley, just north of San Jose and west of Palos Alto. Milpitas was first inhabited by the Tamyen, a subgroup the Muwekma Ohlone hunters and gatherers. Original sites exist beneath Higuera Adobe Park and the Calvary Assembly of God. During the Spanish expeditions, the city was a crossroads for Mission San Jose de Guadalupe and Mission Santa Clara de Asis. The town incorporated on January 26, 1954, however, seven years later the nearby San Jose attempted to annex the city. The men who organized to oppose the annexation were successful in keeping the town independent, and adopted the image of Daniel Chester French’s “Minutemen” Movement Statute was used as a part of the office city seal. A light rail station was added in the early 2000s, making the city the northeastern most stop.
The 2000 census reported a median income for the city as $84,429. The city ranks the highest the percentage of residents working in the electronics and computer industry. More than 75% of the population work outside of the city limits. The majority of people employed in the city live in nearby cities.
There are several shopping centers including The Great Mall of the Bay Area, the largest shopping center in northern California. Located in the foothills of the Diablo Range are two golf courses and Ed R. Levin County Park, the largest regional park. The park provides several outdoor activities including hang gliding, paragliding, and a dog park.
Divided by the Interstates 680 and 880, there are three sections of Milpitas. Residential neighborhoods lay in the north section between the interstates and east of I-680. Without a concentrated downtown area, seventeen neighborhood parks with sports complexes for tennis and baseball and shopping malls dot the city. Municipal and civic centers, like City Hall, are located in the Midtown area. Midtown is the most historic part of the city containing original residences and the a commercial district built before 1945.
Compared to the neighboring cities, Milpitas is considered affordable with 74% of its residents owning a home where 48% of the population holds college degrees or higher. The median home value is $740,000 and $3,200 per month for apartments. The 2015 market trends show that home sales increased 8% and the average price per square foot rose $60.
