Located in the South Bay and against the Diablo Range foothills in Santa Clara County, Milpitas is part of Silicon Valley, just north of San Jose and west of Palos Alto. The city is home to the corporate headquarters of Cisco Systems, FireEye, Maxtor, SanDisk, and Adaptec. 66,000 culturally diverse people live in Milpitas. It was named the 29th best place to live in the United States by Money Magazine in 2014.
Milpitas was first inhabited by the Tamyen, a subgroup the Muwekma Ohlone hunters and gatherers. Original sites exist beneath Higuera Adobe Park and the Calvary Assembly of God. During the Spanish expeditions, the city was a crossroads for Mission San Jose de Guadalupe and Mission Santa Clara de Asis. The town incorporated on January 26, 1954, however, seven years later the nearby San Jose attempted to annex the city. The men who organized to oppose the annexation were successful in keeping the town independent, and adopted the image of Daniel Chester French’s “Minutemen” Movement Statute was used as a part of the office city seal. A light rail station was added in the early 2000s, making the city the northeastern most stop.

Midtown is the most historic part of the city containing original residences and the a commercial district built before 1945.
