Santa Clara, California Details
Santa Clara is located north of San Jose and southeast of the San Francisco Peninsula region. Though San Jose is commonly thought of as the center of Silicon Valley, most of the major tech companies that manufacture hardware are actually based in this city, such as Intel and Applied Materials, Inc. Santa Clara also recently became the home of the San Francisco 49ers, with the new Levi’s Stadium playing host to Super Bowl 50.
Unlike nearby San Francisco, which can be chilly and foggy into August, Santa Clara generally experiences a lot of sunshine year-round and warmer summer temperatures. Snow is almost never seen in this area; rain can be heavy at times during fall and winter, but is almost never seen during the summer months.
Santa Clara is the ninth most populous in California, with a population of about 117,000. There is a strong mix of Hispanic and Asian influence in the population. As would be expected from the headquarters of Silicon Valley, about 46% of the population of the city has a bachelor’s degree or higher, one of the highest ratios in the country. Median income for an individual in the city is about $76,000 and for a family is about $93,500; the latter is the highest in the country, even higher than San Francisco and Manhattan.
Intel and Applied Materials are the two largest employers based in the city. Other major employers in Santa Clara include Texas Instruments, the California Great America amusement park, the data storage company EMC Corporation, the regional headquarters of Macy’s and the healthcare company Agilent Technologies. Many of the nearby cities are also major employment centers for the tech industry including San Jose, Mountain View and Palo Alto.
San Francisco is about 45 miles to the north and is connected to the city by the regional Caltrain commuter light rail line, which runs seven days a week. Amtrak also has a stop in the city for its Capitol Corridor line, a commuter train with multiple daily runs that goes between San Jose and Sacramento with stops throughout the East Bay (such as Oakland and Campbell). From San Jose one can also catch the Coast Starlight train that runs to Los Angeles with stops at the larger cities along the California coast. The Mineta San Jose Airport is also actually partially located in this city.
The median home value in Santa Clara is presently about $991,000, with a median sale price of about $897,000. Home values here have been on a sharp and steady increase since 2013 and are projected to continue rising. The city also has one of the healthiest housing markets in the United States, with virtually zero homes with negative equity, foreclosures or delinquent mortgages in 2015. Santa Clara County rents, which include San Jose and Sunnyvale, are at a median of $2,128 for a one bedroom, but there is wide variation between the different cities.
